Many Pakistanis looking for work in Dubai hear about the "Azad visa": a visa that supposedly lets you live in the UAE and work for anyone. This guide explains what an Azad visa really is, what people pay for one, why it is risky, and the legal freelance visa routes that give you the same freedom without breaking UAE law.
What is an Azad visa?
"Azad visa" (free visa) is not a real UAE visa category. It is a name for an arrangement in which a company registered in the UAE issues you an employment visa, but does not actually employ you. You pay the company, get residency and an Emirates ID in its name, and then look for work elsewhere.
Sellers usually describe it as a "freelancer visa", and some offer extras such as a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or a monthly salary transfer to help you show income for other visa applications.
Is an Azad visa legal in the UAE?
No. Under the UAE labour law, a company must give real work to anyone it sponsors, and you may only work for the employer named on your work permit. The law now fines companies AED 100,000 to AED 1,000,000 for bringing workers to the UAE without giving them a job, or for using work permits for purposes other than the ones they were issued for, and the fine is multiplied by the number of workers involved.
The worker carries real risk too. If the sponsoring company is caught, closed or simply stops renewing, your visa can be cancelled, you can be reported as absconding, and working for someone who is not your sponsor can lead to fines, deportation and a ban on returning.
Dubai Azad visa price in Pakistan
Because it is not an official visa, there is no official price. Agents in Pakistan and the UAE commonly quote around AED 10,000 for a two-year visa, sometimes with 25% paid upfront and the rest after the visa is stamped. Prices vary widely by agent, company and nationality. Cheap offers are one of the most common ways Pakistani job seekers lose money: the visa never arrives, or it is cancelled soon after.

What is a freelance visa in the UAE?
A freelance visa is the legal way to live in the UAE and work for several clients. You get a freelance permit (a licence to work for yourself in a set field) from a government authority or free zone, and then a residence visa sponsored by that permit, so you are your own sponsor.
Freelance visa options for Pakistanis
- Dubai: GoFreelance (Dubai Development Authority). For technology, media, education and design work. The freelance licence package costs AED 7,500 a year. The residence visa is extra: a one-time establishment card of AED 2,000, then AED 4,600 for a one-year visa or AED 5,042 for two years.
- Abu Dhabi: freelance licence through the TAMM portal. You apply online with an attested degree or diploma and a relevant experience letter, then apply for residency under your own licence.
- Other emirates' free zones. Several free zones in Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah sell freelance permits with a residence visa, often as one package. Prices and allowed activities differ, so compare current price lists before you choose.
- Already living in the UAE? Residents on another visa can apply for a freelance work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), usually with a No Objection Certificate from their current sponsor.
Fees change, so always confirm the current cost with the authority before you apply.
How to get a UAE freelance visa from Pakistan
- Choose your field and emirate. Your permit must match the work you will do (for example IT, design, marketing or teaching).
- Prepare your documents. Passport with at least 6 months' validity, photo, CV or portfolio, and your degree or experience letters, attested where required.
- Apply for the freelance permit with the authority or free zone and pay the licence fee.
- Get your entry permit and residency. Enter the UAE, complete the medical test, buy health insurance and apply for your Emirates ID.
